Welcome to your American dream! Here are the things you need to get after you arrived in the US as an immigrant:

First Week

ComEd

Nicor Gas

Phone and/ a US mobile number

Second Week

Driver's License

State ID

Third Week

Bank account

Credit card

A Month

You are ready to work

Within 3 months:

If you are up to it you can get your own car.

The company that sponsored you already got you an appartment and the lease is usually under their name but all the utilities will be under yours. This will depend on your contract with them and this may vary.

Google is your friend to check all the requirements of all these and it differs per state. So might as well get a mobile number early on, prepaid is your best bet since opening a post-paid plan is not easy when you don't have credit history. They usually sell prepaid sim cards at Walmart.

To get proper identification you need to schedule an appointment online and bring in the necessary documents the day of. You will get both ID's in the mail. There is a driving test, written and an actual one if you don't have a professional drivers license from the country you are from.

Once you have all the proper identification you can hit the bank and open an account. This is the trickiest part. Not all banks will just let you open an account the big banks like CHASE is strict. They will redirect you or plainly refuse your business. What was more helpful to me is Old National Bank. They help me set up my account plus the starter credit card to help me build my credit. My friends, favors Wells Fargo too. They are just way accommodating if you are new here.

Now you are all set to join the workforce of the land of the free!
